First Things First...

Now that you've dived into the life of Anna Sun, let's talk about this unattainable idea that we somehow have to be perfect or liked by everyone. I can only imagine how much pressure Anna was under trying to create and perform the next masterpiece after becoming internet famous. Instead of enjoying her success, she was carrying the weight of everyone's expectations.

I'm glad she was in therapy, but honestly, I wish her therapist had pushed back sooner. Anna spent so much of her life believing she had to earn love and approval by being perfect, and it took a very long time for anyone to challenge that way of thinking.

Julian... We Need to Talk

I was actually glad Anna stood her ground when Julian suggested an open relationship. She basically said, "Fine. If you want an open relationship, then I can do it too." One thing I appreciated was that she was never slut-shamed for making that decision. Her friends didn't judge her. The book didn't judge her. It simply let her make a choice. Now...

Can we talk about Julian for a second? I hated that he never really asked Anna to marry him. Instead, his mother and both families just seemed to assume she would say yes because it was the "right" match. Did anyone stop and ask Anna what she wanted? Did anyone ask if she even loved Julian anymore? That moment perfectly summed up Anna's life. Everyone else made decisions for her while expecting her to go along with them quietly.

Then Came Quan...

I am so glad her first date was with Quan. Their first date was an absolute disaster, but honestly, that made me love them even more. He laughed at Anna's reaction, but I think deep down he was just as nervous as she was. We eventually learn that he absolutely was. The whole Netflix-and-chill phone conversation had me laughing. That was the moment I started rooting for him. He wasn't trying to force anything. He wanted another chance to get to know this beautiful woman.

Why Quan Became One of My Favorite Romance Heroes

One of my favorite parts of this story was watching Anna slowly become herself around Quan. Meanwhile... Quan embraced every awkward, quirky, and eccentric part of who she was. He encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone, but never pushed too hard. He never made her feel stupid. He never called her names. He wanted Anna to feel safe enough to be herself. That's what healthy love should look like.

Healthy Intimacy

Okay... We have to talk about the elephant in the room. The romance. I loved how Helen Hoang handled the intimate scenes. Even though Quan struggled with his own body image after everything he'd gone through, he never once made Anna feel insecure about her body.

Instead, he celebrated her. He helped her understand her own body safely and respectfully. He encouraged communication. He made awkward moments funny instead of embarrassing. Most importantly...Even when Anna was at her absolute lowest, Quan never made everything about sex or his own needs. He respected her boundaries. When Anna wasn't ready, he accepted it without guilt-tripping her or making her feel bad. Honestly... The bar shouldn't be this low. But unfortunately, sometimes it is. That made me respect Quan even more.

Anna & Quan Mirror Each Other

One thing I absolutely loved was realizing just how similar Anna and Quan really were. Quan spent years fighting for his brother. Anna spent years wishing someone would fight for her. Anna believed she had to be perfect. Quan struggled with feeling "less than" because his body wasn't what it once was. Different journeys. The same question. "Am I enough?" I thought that parallel was beautifully written.

Family Expectations

I really felt for Anna because it seemed like most of her family refused to accept that she was a grown woman. I understand the cultural expectation of respecting your elders, even when they say or do things that deeply hurt you. That hit home for me. One thing that really stood out was how Anna's family didn't think Quan was good enough for her, even though they barely knew anything about him.

Yes, they were both Asian, but it still felt like there were layers of family expectations, social status, and what was considered an "acceptable" match.

Reading that reminded me of conversations around colorism in the Black community. Growing up, we've all heard terms like light skin, dark skin, yellow bone, and red bone, along with the unspoken message that the closer your appearance is to white beauty standards, the more desirable you're considered.

While the situations aren't the same, it reminded me that many cultures have their own versions of deciding who is "good enough" based on things that have nothing to do with someone's heart or character.

Meanwhile... Quan continued proving over and over again that he was exactly the kind of man Anna deserved.

Quan's Hustle

I also appreciated the difference between Quan's family and Anna's. They both worked hard, but life handed them very different opportunities. Quan and his friends were true go-getters. They were building businesses. Taking risks. Creating wealth for themselves. Anna's family worked incredibly hard too, but it felt like they had more stability and opportunity. Quan even talks about his father leaving when he was younger. You can understand why success meant something completely different to him.

When Everything Fell Apart

The moment Anna lost Quan... Then... Almost immediately afterward...broke her violin absolutely broke my heart. Back to back. It honestly felt like the straw that broke the camel's back. Everything she'd been holding together for years finally shattered. I was also genuinely worried about Quan.

He had just watched the woman he loved seemingly accept another man's proposal. At the same time, his company was struggling, and he was facing the possibility of losing everything he had worked so hard to build. He wasn't just losing Anna. He felt like he was losing his future.

Anna Finally Takes Control

One thing I loved was that Anna went after Quan. She apologized. She took responsibility. She finally stopped allowing everyone else to make decisions for her life. That felt like real growth. I also appreciated that Quan actually listened. Even though he was hurt, he could see how hard she was trying.

Anna's Parents & Sister

I was really happy Anna's mother finally came around. It wasn't perfect. It wasn't instant. But it felt earned. Now... Her sister... Girl... She needed a good old-fashioned slap upside the head. The moment Anna finally shared that she was on the autism spectrum and her family immediately dismissed her made me so angry.

Instead of trying to understand her, they shut her down again. Anna had spent her entire life being conditioned to obey, to stay quiet, and to be "the good daughter." Sometimes it takes losing everything before we're finally willing to change.

One thing I kept wondering—and this is just my own interpretation—was whether Anna's sister might have had feelings for Faith. Maybe I completely read that wrong. Maybe she was simply jealous. Maybe she was controlling. But I couldn't help wondering if she was hiding part of herself because she feared disappointing her family. What do you think?

The Parts That Hit Home

This section hit me harder than I expected. Unfortunately, I've experienced something very similar. I've had one family member pass away after being on life support following a heart attack, and I held their hand until the very end. I've also had two family members suffer strokes. One recovered because help came quickly. The other now lives in a long-term care facility and requires around-the-clock care. Watching someone you love become smaller, quieter, and more fragile changes you forever. That's exactly what I felt while reading about Anna's father.

The Little Things I Loved

Can we appreciate the octopus for a second?

🐙

It honestly became their little mascot. Sometimes the smallest details become the ones you remember most. I also loved how good Quan was with children. It was another reminder that strength isn't always loud. Sometimes it's shown through patience, gentleness, and consistency.

Final Thoughts

I absolutely loved getting both Anna's and Quan's perspectives. That dual point of view made this story even stronger because we weren't left guessing what either character was thinking. Watching two imperfect people slowly heal together felt honest. Messy. Beautiful. And incredibly real. I’m also glad she played for him on his birthday! Yes!!! Queen!

Let's Keep Talking

Now it's your turn.

I'd love to hear what you think.

  • Have you ever missed out on something because of fear or because you didn't want to disappoint your family?

  • Have you ever stayed in a relationship, friendship, or job because you were afraid of being seen as the "bad" person?

  • Have you ever had a partner genuinely ask you what you wanted and make you feel safe enough to answer honestly?

  • Have you experienced a loss that completely changed your life?

  • What do you think Anna could have done differently with her family?

  • What could she have done differently with her sister?

  • Do you think women are often raised to believe they have to be perfect, stay quiet, and always be "the good girl"?

  • Do you think Quan would have become the same man if he hadn't had such supportive friends?

  • How did you interpret Anna's sister? Was she simply a bully, or do you think there was something deeper going on?

  • Which scene hit you the hardest?

  • And... did the octopus become your favorite little mascot too? 🐙

I genuinely want to hear your thoughts because I think this is one of those books that sparks a different conversation for every reader.

Until Next Time...

Keep reading, keep questioning, and let's keep the conversation going.

Happy Reading!
